WHAT IS PORTAL IN MIKROTIK?

In MikroTik routers, a "portal" usually refers to a captive portal, which allows network managers to govern user access to a Wi-Fi or wired network. Captive portals are frequently used in public Wi-Fi networks, such as those found in hotels, airports, cafes, and other public locations. Before receiving full internet access, users must verify or agree to specific terms and conditions via the portal.

Here's how a captive portal works with MikroTik routers:

Authentication and authorization: When a user connects to a Wi-Fi or wired network via a MikroTik router, they are led to a login screen (the captive portal). This page may ask them to provide a username and password or agree to certain terms and conditions.

User Management: The MikroTik router keeps track of authenticated users and allows managers to manage their sessions. This contains features like session timeouts, bandwidth control, and the ability to see current users.

Customization: Administrators can change the appearance of the captive portal login page, including branding, logos, and any additional information or instructions for users.

Billing and Voucher Systems: MikroTik routers frequently integrate with billing systems, enabling network operators to provide paid access to customers. Users may also use voucher systems, in which they enter a unique code to receive access for a set period of time.

Access Control: Captive portals allow network administrators to impose access policies. They can, for example, limit users' bandwidth or redirect them to a certain landing page.

To configure a captive portal on a MikroTik router, the following general steps are often required:

Set the router's wireless or wired interface settings.

- Create a hotspot configuration, including the authentication mechanism and other options.

- Customize the captive portal login page as needed.

- Configure user profiles and access policies.

- Connect a device to the network and test the captive portal.

It's important to note that the exact procedures and capabilities offered may differ depending on the MikroTik router type and RouterOS (MikroTik's operating system) version utilized. When configuring a captive portal, refer to the documentation for your router model and software version.
